Description

West Affric Estate was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1994. As part of the future management of the estate an extensive system of tree exclosures both for deliberate planting and natural regeneration has been planned and already partially implemented. An initial visit by Robin Turner, NTS Archaeologist, established that there was archaeological potential for a survey of the estate. This was carried out in two stages. Bob Gourlay of Highland Region Archaeology Service examined aerial photographs taken at 1:10,000 scale and J Wordsworth examined historical sources and carried out a rapid field survey. The site was visited on the 25th June and the 1st July 1995, the first examining the north side of the glen as far as Allt Cnoc na Cuaille and the second examining the south side down Allt Camban and Allt a'Chomhlain. The weather was generally good, though excessively hot on the first day's survey. Extensive areas of the lower lying areas of the estate were covered and it is hoped that the majority of sites were identified. Photographs were taken generally of the sites, though most especially the settlement at site 2 were not photogenic. <1>
