Description

An archaeological survey of a proposed WGS area on Hilton Estate, Guisachan, Strathglass was commissioned by CKD Finlayson Hughes. A deskbound survey was carried out on available sources in Highland Council Sites & Monuments Record and Archive Services. Additionally secondary sources were examined in Inverness Reference Library in order to put the findings in a historical context. A field survey was then carried out on the 4th August 2000 examining the area by a series of transects running approx. North/South. The survey conditions were mostly dry but cloudy. Particular attention was paid to grassy flushes associated with the numerous small burns running to the West towards Strath Glass. Certain areas were obscured by bracken growth and it is possible that sites may not have been seen because of this growth. It was not possible to walk the whole area of the proposed WGS in the time available, but as the majority of the area was covered in coarse grasses and bog, it is not thought that a more detailed survey would add significantly to the information recovered. <1>
