Description

A DBA and walkover survey was carried out by M Wildgoose in November 2001 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Edinbane, Isle of Skye. Twenty-three archaeological sites were identified during the assessment including: stone byres, a stone house, a circular structure, farmsteads, a possible stone circle, a hut circle, a possible stack stand, both shielings and shieling groups, and a pen. Wildgoose recommended that a 30 metre buffer zone should be left around all archaeological sites; watching briefs should be carried out at multiple sites; one turbine should be relocated due to its close proximity to a major junction of boundary dykes; that care should be taken when installing turbines to protect certain sites in close proximity; that access roads should not run along boundary dykes; that a 5 metre buffer should be left between tracks and boundary dykes; that boundary dykes should not be used as sub-bases for roads; rerouting of the access road was recommended to protect sites and careful monitoring of site choice for the sub-station. <1>
