Description
A watching brief was carried out by C Dagg in 2002 during the undergrounding of an 11kV power line at Portmahomack, Tarbat in Easter Ross. The excavation of a trench 0.7m in depth and 0.3m wide at its base and no more than 0.4m wide at ground level was monitored. At the southern end of the trench, opposite the manse, a number of sherds of pottery and broken glass were revealed in the topsoil. These are presumed to be from C19-C20 midden material from the manse, and were not retained. No archaeological features were exposed during the work but there remains the possibility that features exist at a depth greater than 0.7m in the sections where the base of the topsoil was not reached.
