Full Description

(NH 6344 9212) Enclosure (NR) OS 25" map, (1967)

A fortuitous arrangement of stones (described as an enclosure by the previous field investigator - {WDJ}) forming a rough circle, measuring abut 13.5m E - W by about 12.5m transversely, with an uneven, stony interior.
Visited by OS (W D J) 12 June 1963 and (R L) 16 October 1969.

This feature is situated on a small, dry knoll in broken and sometimes marshy country. It appears to be an enclosure, albeit ill-defined, rather than a fortuitous arrangement. It is approximately 14.5m in overall diameter, although its circularity is not perfect, small angular bends occurring around the perimeter. For about half the perimeter, the wall is a rubble band 1.0m to 1.5m wide and 0.3m average height; in the NNE it is virtually destroyed for 6.0m. In the SE, four large blocks fall on or just inside the wall line. In places, particularly the NW, the impression is given that the ground immediately within the wall has been quarried to form the wall but this may be illusory. The interior is slightly 'domed' and seems to be the natural land surface. As it is higher towards the centre than the wall top it can be concluded that it is almost certainly not a hut circle. The lack of stone in the interior mitigates against it being a robbed cairn. Therefore its origins are uncertain it may simply be a crude enclosure of the post-medieval period.
Visited by OS (J B) 8 September 1980.
