Full Description
NH69SW 24 6185 9388.
(NH 6183 9386) Carn an Duin (NR) OS 25" map, (1969)
Probably a cairn, not a broch as suggested by the name.
RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909.
Carn an Duin, occupying the summit of a low knoll at NH 6185 9388 (wrongly positioned on OS 25"), consists of a stone-walled hut within the remains of a surrounding wall.
The hut, sub-circular on plan, measures c.11.6m in diameter within a double wall 1.6m thick. Both wall faces can be seen intermittently except in the mutilated N arc. The W side of the entrance, in the SE, is marked by a jamb. A displaced block close by may have flanked the other side. A later sub-rectangular structure is built into the wall in the SW.
The surrounding stone wall, c.4.0m from the hut, is reduced to a discontinuous line of stones on edge, destroyed in the S and NW. It is almost certainly contemporary with the hut. (See hut 'G' of NH69SW 5, and NH69SW 41).
About 70.0m to the E is an area of cleared ground with two stone clearance heaps on the E side, probably a contemporary plot.
Visited by OS (R L) 9 October 1969.
No change. Visited by OS (J B)1 September 1980.
