Full Description
Cairn (NR) OS 6" map, (1964)
Close to the south side of the road are the remains of what seems to have been a cairn. The rim alone remains, 0.8m maximum height, and the overall diameter is 19m.
Visited by OS (J L D) 8 June 1960.
This structure more closely resembles a mutilated hut circle than a robbed cairn. It is situated on a natural terrace above the river flood-plain, and measures 12m in diameter within what is almost certainly a tumbled wall 0.6m high, spread to 2.5m wide, in which eight large stones on edge, presumably the inner face, remain. A single slab set radially in the "wall" may be a portal stone, though no entrance gap is apparent. The interior is level though strewn with stones. A catch drain has recently been dug destroying the north arc revealing a rubble content; three boulders, possibly inner facing stones, have been displaced.
There is one, possibly two, stone clearance heaps and relatively stone-free ground on the terrace to the east; the area to the south is more recently cultivated.
Revised at 1/10,000. Visited by OS (N K B) 2 December 1976.
