Full Description

(Location cited as ND 023 150). Helmsdale Railway Station, built 1871 for the Duke of Sutherland's Railway. A two-platform through station with a one storey and attic building on a T plan, with a platform awning in L angle. On the up platform is a small wooden shelter, and the platforms are linked by a lattice-girder footbridge. <1>

It was listed at Category B in 1987 with the footbridge and signal box.

This intermediate station on the Inverness - Wick and Thurso ('Far North') line of the former Highland Rly. It remains in regular use by passenger traffic.

Built for the Duke of Sutherland's Railway in 1871. Broad-eaved cottagey main building. <3>

Early 1870s; the terminus of the Duke of Sutherland's Railway and the starting point of the Sutherland and Caithness Railway. <4>

Station building no longer in use. All windows are boarded over. <5>

Elizabeth Beaton describes this building as being "in Sutherland style, gabled with deep eaves and swept roof over revanda supported by bracketed timber arcade, a plainer version of its counterpart at Golspie". <6>

A full photographic survey of the building in 2013 was supplied to support a planning application for the restoration and conversion of the derelict building for use as holiday lets. <8>

The statutory address of the listing was updated by Historic Scotland in 2013 after the Scottish Signal Box Review. <9>
