Full Description

NC36NE 58 387 654.

A group of five turf-covered stone footings, probably not all contemporary. The footings at NC 3879 6553 and NC 3874 6540 do not particularly resemble the usual early modern remains in appearance or plan; their appearance suggests an earlier date. The northern feature is a sub-rectangular scooped enclosure 13m NE-SW by 4.5m internally with the NE end noticeably bowed. The floor is sunken, particularly at the S end, but this variance may be caused by differential peat growth. The wall is marked by intermittent boulders on edge. 15m to the E is a possibly contemporary indeterminate footing 6.5m by 3m within a rubble wall. It has possibly been disturbed by quarrying. The southern enclosure is oval with somewhat angled ends. It measures 10.5m N-S by 5m within a turf and heather covered wall 1.4m wide. About six boulders on edge around the N half mark the inner and outer faces. No entrance is visible in either of the larger features. The three other features in the area appear to be early modern. Two are longhouse footings with small abutting enclosures. The third is a large L-shaped enclosure, presumably for stock or cultivation.
Visited by OS (JLD) 7 April 1960 and (JB) 28 April 1980.
