Full Description
(NC 7407 0662) Hut Circle (NR) OS 25" map, (1967)
A hut circle located during field investigation.
Surveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (N K B) 24 February 1966.
The hut circle measures approximately 7.5m diameter within a heather and turf-covered wall spread to 2.5m average width and 0.4m high; the entrance is in the SE. Associated land-use is denoted by a number of stone clearance heaps in the close vicinity. There are indications of intrusion by strip cultivation abandoned in the 18/19th century.
Revised at 1/2500. Visited by OS (J M) 8 April 1981.
This hut-circle (ROG95 10) is situated on a rough-grass covered terrace above a peat-filled basin in the angle between two public roads. It measures 6.9m from NE to SW by 6.2m transversely within a stony bank spread to a thickness of 2.1m and standing 0.4m in height. The interior is slightly dished, sloping up to the entrance, which lies on the SE.
There are about twelve small cairns (ROG95 898), measuring up to 6m in diameter and 0.5m in height, on the terrace around the hut-circle. A low stony bank runs along the edge of a slight gully marking the NE extent of the cairns. The spread of cairns continues to the SE of the public road and may have formed part of a larger site (see also NC 70NW 49).
