Full Description

(NC 7837 2676) Cairn (NR)
OS 6"map, (1962)
The remains of a cairn discovered during field investigation and consisting of a much-robbed mound of bare stones 14.3m E-W by 17m N-S, with a maximum height of 0.6m. The stones lie mainly round the perimeter with a small rounded heap in the centre. At the south edge is a recess measuring 3.5m across its south end and extending about 3.7m in towards the centre of the cairn. About 84m south of the cairn is a small heap of stones, 6m in diameter and 0.3m high, with a 'tail' of stones, 2.5m broad, running westward for 12m. Two or three small, heather-covered piles of stones, possibly clearance heaps, lie nearby.
Visited by OS (W D J) 21 May 1961.
This feature is as described and illustrated by the previous OS field investigator. Its mutilated condition leaves little evidence for positive classification, although its size and stone quality are typical of cairns. It is surrounded on all sides by heather-covered run-rig.
The heap of stones to the S is probably field clearance contemporary with the ploughing.
Visited by OS (J B) 7 March 1977.
