Full Description
Centred at NC 705 394, on an undulating SW-facing hill-slope between broken and marshy ground, is a settlement of three heather-covered hut circles ('A'-'C') and a minor field system. 'A' is set on a low ridge and measures 8.5m N-S by 7.5m within a low wall spread to 2.0m. The entrance is in the S. 'B' set on a spur is 6.5m in diameter internally. The wall and the entrance are similar to those of 'A'. 'C' has been built on to the the top of a small eminence. It measures 11.0m N-S by 10.0m within a wall generally spread to 2.0m widening to 3.0m at the entrance in the S. where a maximum height of 0.5m is reached. The wall has been revetted on the W side. A vague wall springs from the NW arc of this hut and runs about 9.0m to the N, to the edge of the level summit of the hillock where it fades out. Possibly it swung around the perimeter of the summit rejoining the hut wall in the SE, although there is no certain evidence of this.
Contemporary cultivation is marked by patches of cleared ground around and immediately to the W of the huts. The definition of the field system is better in the vicinity of hut 'C' with clearance heaps and a clearly defined lynchet; around 'A' and 'B', it is marked only by sporadic clearance. Elsewhere the ground is generally unsuitable for cultivation.
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
