Full Description

NC76SW 28 733 605.

At NC 733 605, on low moorland ridge, is a settlement of four, possibly five hut circles (A-D) within a minor field system.
Hut 'A' measures 7.0m in diameter within a bracken and heather covered wall 0.5m high spread to 2.5m. The interior is levelled into a slope; no entrance is visible. It lies tangentially within an oval enclosure or possibly a hut circle of more massive proportions, measuirng 14.5m north west-south east by approximately 12.0m transversely, within an overgrown wall 1.0m high containing intermittent inner facing stones on edge.
'B', also bracken covered, is oval 12.0m north west-south east by 10.0m transversely within a wall 1.0m high and spread to 2.5m broad. Occasional inner facing stones are exposed. The entrance gap, unusually, is on the shorter axis in the south west arc. The north west half of hut 'C' is destroyed by a recently constructed track. The wall content of rubble stones and earth with larger retaining blocks, now displaced, is exposed in the edge of the track. The hut measures about 9.0m across north east-south west, within a wall now spread and heather covered, but originally about 2.0m wide.
Hut 'D' is 7.0m in diameter within a wall spread to 2.0m in which one or two inner facing slabs are visible. The entrance of simple form is in the south west arc; in the centre is an amorphous pile of stones, almost certainly a later dump.
The minor field system, limited to the ridge in the immediate vicinity of the huts, comprises about a dozen scattered clearance heaps amidst relatively stone free ground; no measurable plots can be identified. Surveyed at 1:10000.
Visited by OS (N K B) 15 August 1978.
