Full Description
Hut Circles and Enclosures (NR) (Seven shown A-G) OS 6" map, (1969)
2 hut circles and 5 enclosures discovered during field investigation. Surveyed at 1:10,560.
They may be among the thirteen unlocated hut circles of NC81SW 23. Visited by OS (R D L) 28 April 1964.
Situated on a SW-facing slope in open moorland, is a settlement of ten stone-walled huts (A-K) within an associated field system.
The huts are of similar construction, each with a low heather-covered wall spread to about 2.5m all round, with an entrance in S or SE arc. Hut K is circular, 10m internal diameter; remainder are internally from 12.5m x 10.5m (A) to smallest (G) 7.5m by 5.5m, the longer axis being through the entrance. On NE arc of hut D is a wall forming a semi-circular extramural chamber, 6m by 2.5m; whether this chamber is contemporary with hut is uncertain.
The field system extends over eight hectares comprises stone clearance heaps, lynchets and field walls delineating field plots 50m by 20m average size. Some of the walls may be associated with later early modern cultivation plots now disused, which occur within the field system.
Re-surveyed at 1:10,560. Visited by OS (J B) 22 December 1975.
