Full Description

(Centred NC 740 319) Enclosures and Hut Circles (NR) (Centred NC 741 317) Enclosures and Hut Circles (NR)
OS 6" map, (1963)

A settlement of seven hut-circles or enclosures, with associated field clearance heaps found during field investigation on the west-facing slopes of Leathad Bad na Crubaig.
Visited by OS (E G C) 18 May 1961.

This settlement comprises ten hut circles ('A'-'K'), of which four are newly recognised. The feature published on OS 6"map at NC 7402 3184 is a mutilated clearance heap not a hut circle. It is 3.0m in diameter internally with a 'bank' 0.7m high in the SE fading to nothing in the NW. Large stones protrude through the heather covering.
The huts have all been slightly levelled into the hillside and are largely turf and heather-covered. They are of simple form with entrances in the S arc and with one exception are oval, ranging in size from 14.5m N-S by 12.5m down to 7.5m N-S by 6.5m within low walls spread to 2.0m where preserved. 'A' is the best-defined with the wall 0.7m high and spread to 2.5m. Huts 'B' and 'C' have unusual associated features; a shallow ditch and low outer bank, possibly constructed for drainage, run parallel to the hut wall of 'B' in the SE, and at 'C' a low wall of uncertain association, but probably secondary runs E-W across the hut interior 3.7m from the hut's entrance.
A field system of approximately twelve hectares, most clearly defined around NC 7405 3185, surrounds the huts. It consists of numerous field clearance heaps, stretches of linear clearance and several clearly defined lynchets. Occasional plots were noted, a good example measured 30m by 20m.
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
Visited by OS (J B) 9 May 1977.
