(NC 716 348) Tumuli (NR) OS 6"map, Sutherland, 2nd ed., (1873)
Astride the saddle of N ridge of Cnoc Bad na Fainne are about fifty to sixty heather-covered mounds, apparently clearance cairns, though other funtions are possible. Further scattered examples occur along the side of the hill in all directions. The heaps are circular or oval sometimes elongated varying from less than 3m to 8m across and up to 0.7m high, sometimes joined together by low banks. The majority of the cairns seem to be of tight-packed stones, others are loose heaps with considerable airspaces, and others have a large proportion of earth in their construction.
Info from MS, A Field Survey in Loch Rimsdale Area, June 1975, site ref 3.
Of the mounds described above, there is little doubt that the large close set examples 10m to 15m apart in the vicinity of the stone rows (NC73SW 12) are clearance heaps, though no huts were identified and there is no pattern of cultivation plots discernible. The area is blanketed by thick peat growth.
Visited by OS (J B) 11 May 1977.
