Full Description
NC74SE 1 761 410.
At NC 7615 4103 and NC 7642 4114, on a west facing hillside, are two enclosures (A and B). One or two low heather covered mounds in the vicinity may indicate associated field clearance. The enclosures are reduced but appear to be of similar type; entrances cannot be identified.
'A' is 11.0m in diameter within a turf wall spread to 2.0m, and standing an average 0.3m high. Encircling the enclosure at a distance varying from 4.0m-5.5m is a flat bottomed depression very noticeable in the north and south, much less so elsewhere. It is about 3.0m wide and at most 0.4m deep with no signs of upcast banking. The immediate situation is a deep natural shelf, and there may well have been surface quarrying to slightly elevate the stance and at the same time provide rough drainage.
'B' is 12.0m north north west-south south east by 11.0m within a turf wall spread from 2.0-2.5m, and standing 0.2m high.
The turf wall of each enclosure contrasts with the heather covered interior and surrounding ground. A feature of these banks is acentral groove which runs round the top (see also NC74SE 2, NC74SW 6 and 8, and NC84NE 3 and 4).
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
