Full Description
NC74SW 7 7447 4031.
At NC 7447 4031, on prominent ground in lower reaches of a gentle W facing hillslope is a low rounded knoll 0.9m high with a mound on summmit, a bank and outer ditch. The site is obscured by heather growth and peat occumulation. The area enclosed by bank is 21.5m in diameter; bank is of v regular profile 3m broad, its summit 0.5m above the surrounding ditch and 0.2m high internally; some stone is visible in its content. The only break in the circuit is in W arc, but this appears to be a later mutilation. The outer ditch is 4m to 5m wide and a mere 0.2m below surrounding ground level, though it appears heavily silted. Two scarps accur across ditch; one in W adjacent to break in bank, other in the SE arc.
Their purpose is unclear and they may be a result of soil erosion. The mound in the enclosed area is slightly south of centre. It measures approximately 11.5m N-S by 10.0m E-W and 0.5m high, but its margins are indistinct merging with the natural ground slope. This would suggest to be a form of embanked barrow, not commonly found in this part of Sutherland.
Surveyed at 1:10,000. Visited by OS (N K B) 1 July 1977.
