Full Description
NC74SW 8 747 406.
At NC 7469 4060 and NC 7474 4074 on a west facing hillside are two enclosures (A and B). The only definite sign of cultivation is a field clearance heap near by 'A', but the general vicinity is heather cropped and free of stone. On the slopes above the enclosures are several green patches with indications of narrow-rig cultivation. The enclosures are turf formed and much waste, but appear of similar type. Dimensions of 'A' and 'B' are respectively 9.5m and 10.0m in diameter within banks spread from 2.0-3.0m, and standing on average 0.2m high; an ill defined entrance is only evident in 'A' in the south. A feature of the banks of both enclosures is a central groove running around the top, 0.4m wide by 0.1m deep.
The facts that there has been no attempt at levelling the interior of these enclosures; a lack of stone in construction; no clear entrances; the close proximity of shieling type bothies (see NC74SW 5), and little signs of cultivation, tend to imply that these may have been sheep folds rather than hut circles; but the presence of a 'grooved' bank makes them worthy of special note (see also NC74SW 6, NC74SE 1 and 2 and NC84NE 3 and 4).
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
