Full Description

NC71SE 19 786 139.

(Centred NC 786 139) A settlement of three stone-walled huts within a minor field system, was found during field investigation on an undulating east-facing slope adjacent to the depopulated township of Achnacoile.
Visited by OS (R D L) 4 May 1964.

Huts 'A' (NC 7869 1385) and 'B' (NC 7865 1394) are set on rises. Hut 'A' measures 10m in diameter within a substantial wall, spread to 3m with a simple entrance in the south. Hut 'B' measures 8.5m in diameter within a wall 1.7m thick both of whose faces are visible inter- mittently. A gap in the SSW may be an entrance. Hut 'C' (NC 7868 1397) is scooped out of the slope and measures 12.5m in internal diameter. The west arc consists of an artificial scarp topped by fragmentary stone walling, but elsewhere the walling is obscured and appears to be spread to about 2m. There is no definite sign of an entrance but it was probably from the south.
The small field system consists of scattered field clearance heaps extending along the hillside to the north of the settlement for about 150m. No cultivation plots are discernible.
Surveyed at 1:10 560.
Visited by OS (J M) 26 November 1975.
