Full Description

The remains of five shielings and an irregularly shaped enclosure within a large walled enclosure.
Visited by OS (E G C) 15 May 1961.

The stone and turf footings of the shielings range in size from 3.0m by 1.3m to 8.0m by 2.0m, and in height from 0.1m to 0.3m. The "irregular enclosure" at NC 7017 3292 consists of an oval platform built onto the slope in the SE; overall it measures 12.0m SE-NW by 11.0m. There are traces of stone in the SE with more vague remains in the N. The E arc is mutilated by run-rig. The feature is possibly a hut circle but the remains are too amorphous for certain classification.
Run-rig and clearance heaps lie within the enclosing wall, the former apparently overlaid by one or two shielings. Some of the clearance heaps appear to be contemporary with the run-rig the others are more like to be associated with the adjacent hut circle settlement (see NC73SW6).
Visited by OS (J B) 2 May 1977.

An enclosure is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet lv). Four unroofed structures, which are annotated as Old Shielings, within an enclosure, and a hut-circle (NC73SW 6) are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,000 map (1992).
