Monument record MHG1174 - Burnt Mound, Cnoc Sheangan

On the margin of dampish ground in rising moorland, is a horse-shoe shaped burnt mound overgrown with turf and heather. It measures 12m diameter and ranges in height from a maximum of 1.2m at the open (S) end, to a minimum of 0.5m in N. Probing reveals reddened fragments of stone. Two or three random stone blocks were noted in the mound.
Surveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (J M) 10 November 1982.

This large burnt mound is situated on E side of one of the shallow gullies that extend up on to the S flank of Cnoc Sheangan. Penannular on plan, it measures 12m from ENE-WSW by 11.2m transversely overall and encloses a hollow interior some 3m in diameter. On account of its position on the scarp forming the E side of the gully, the E side of the mound rises 1.6m above the interior, although the bank of burnt mound material both here and on the N, is no more than 0.5m high. The most substantial part of the mound lies on the W side of the opening on the SSE, and is up to 1.2m high. Several large stone protrude through the turf at the inner and outer ends of the opening, those on the E of the outer end giving the impression of a coursed revetment. This may indicate that at least the opening was faced with stone.
