(NH 7920 9912) Cairn (NR), (NH 7918 9917) Cairn (NR) Stone Cist (NR) OS 6" map, Sutherland, 2nd ed., (1907)
On the moor about a third of mile NW of cottages above quarry at Kirkton is a hut circle of ordinary type, covered with vegetation and rather ill-defined. Some 30 yards N of hut is a cairn measuring about 60ft by 38ft, with its longest axis ENE-WSW. Some 40ft from N end, and 18ft from E side, is a stone cist formed of four large slabs, the covering slab being missing. It lies in the direction of the main axis of the cairn, and is internally 3ft 5ins long by 3ft 1in broad.
RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909.
The alleged hut circle mentioned by the RCAHMS is probably the denuded cairn at NH 7920 9912, which measures 17m in diameter, with a large depression in its centre where it has been robbed. The much-robbed cairn with cist is as described.
Resurveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (R B) 3 February 1966.
The two disturbed cairns are generally as described above. The first is turf covered, slumped and robbed; it now measures about 15m in diameter and 0.6m high. The second, with cist revealed, is sub-oval, measuring 21.0m NE-SW by 11.5m and 0.6m high.
Revised at 1:2500. Visited by OS (J B) 26 May 1981.
