Full Description
NH 7659 9975) Cairn (NR) OS 1:10,000 map, (1971)
The remains of large cairn whose interior has been entirely removed at no distant date, leaving no trace of chamber or cist.
The cairn appears to have been unusual in plan in that a single horn seems to have projected towards NNW. The outline of both cairn and horn has been marked by large boulders, 2ft to 3ft long and 1.5ft to 2ft high, many of which remain in situ. E-W diameter is about 80 feet and N-S 78ft, while measurement along projection is 95ft. Displacement of stones on south makes interpretation in that area difficult. RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909.
The site is so ruined that not much reliance can be placed on the horn noted by RCAHMS. A S Henshall 1963.
The cairn is generally as described by RCAHMS, though the NNW projection is ill-defined. Although heavily robbed the cairn still stands 1.5m. high on the south.
Visited by OS (R D L) 11 April 1964.
No change to previous field report. Revised at 1:10,000.
Visited by OS (J B) 26 May 1981.
