Full Description

NH78NW 24 7009 8884.

At NH 7009 8884 on a low rise in Black Wood, is a circular enclosure overgrown with firs, birch and whin and obscured by fallen branches. It measures about 14.0m diameter within a rubble wall, on average 1.5m broad and 0.2m high. The only indication of an entrance or entrances are two ragged gaps three metres apart in the east quardrant, but they may be later mutilations. From between the gaps a low, amorphous stony mound bisects the level interior of the enclosure. In the mound are two upright blocks, 0.3 by 0.4m and 0.3 by 0.6m, protruding to 0.3m. Some angularity is noted in the line of the enclosure wall in the south-west sector. The enclosure appears of some age but its purpose is uncertain. It could be a hut circle containing a later mound, or possibly a robbed cairn; there is no evidence of early cultivation in the wood.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (J M) 17 September 1980.
