Full Description
NC45SW 5 420 549.
NC 420 550. A cluster of five shielings with associated structures including an oval enclosure built into the hillside at NC 4203 5515. The shielings are oval and average 20ft by 12ft. Then at NC 4202 5501 stands on a slight artificial mound. At NC 4200 5495, an oval house, 14ft by 12ft, also built on an artificial mound, may be a shieling.
Information contained in letter and field notes from K Reid 25 September 1978.
At NC 420 549, in a sheltered valley on either side of a burn, 300ft to 400ft OD, is a group of thirteen shielings reduced to their footings, which are partially enclosed by a ruinous stone wall. The shielings are of stone or stone and turf construction, and are oval or rectangular with rounded ends, on average 4.0m by 3.0m. The two 'artificial mounds' noted by Reid are probably the residue fromsuccessive shielings built on the same spot.
Surveyed at 1:10,000.
Visited by OS (N K B) 27 November 1978.
