Full Description

In 1968 or thereabouts, during the construction of an underground water tank on a prominent spur overlooking Loch Hope, a short cist was discovered. According to Mr D Mayer (Hope Lodge, Tongue), who was present at the discovery, the cist was about 1.2m by 0.7m and 0.6m deep, composed of four upright slabs and a capstone. It contained the remains of an adult skeleton but no grave goods. The cist was left in situ though it is not now visible, and contents were removed by Dr M M Simpson (Old Shore, Golspie), who believes they were forwarded to NMAS. Mr Mayer states that traces of what may have been more cists were found at about the same time in close proximity, but these were not investigated.
Visited by OS (N K B) 30 April 1980.
