Full Description

NC46SE 13 4745 6015.
On a prominent spur, in what was once the ornamental gardens of Hope Lodge, are two turf-covered, stone-built enclosures, partially overgrown with scrub birch and severely denuded. They are of similar size, 8m diameter within a stony bank 2m wide and 0.3m high where best preserved; there is no trace of wall faces. No entrance can be identified in the W enclosure, but a wide gap in the other example in the E arc may be a mutilated entrance.
In open country these enclosures would be considered to be hut circles, but their position in a garden amongst amorphous stony banks and general ground disturbance renders their classification uncertain. There is no trace of stone clearance nearby.
Surveyed at 1:10,000. Visited by OS (N K B) 30 April 1980.
