Full Description

Photo: mound of large stones at E end of field, but similar heap further to the W as well in area delineated "hut circle" on 1st ed - NB cairn not marked on this - HAW 5/2004

(NC 5920 0501) Cairn (NR) OS 1:10,000 map, (1970)
A circular cairn, overgrown with grass and whins. It is 32ft in diameter and from 3 to 4ft high. A cattle-shed has been built partly into it on the SE. The exposure of a section of it seems to show that it was formed of boulders and turf.
RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909.

A flat-topped, grass-covered stony mound, 1.0m high, averaging 10.0m in diameter. It is steep-sided on the E where it has been partly cut away. It is considerably larger than the field clearance mounds in this area, and it may be a burial cairn.
Visited by OS (R D L) 7 July 1963.

This mound, as described, is situated within a pasture field on a prominent hillside terrace. It exhibits a typical bowl-shaped profile, and is circular on plan; it is therefore probably a cairn, though no kerb or cist is visible, and there are similar but smaller mounds in the vicinity which are stone clearance heaps (See NC50NE 21).
Re-surveyed at 1:2500. Visited by OS (N K B) 12 August 1976.

This cairn was visited and photographed during a walkover survey in April 2009. <1>
