Full Description

NC36NE 47 3886 6554.

(NC 3883 6556) The arrangement of stones marked by the OS does not appear to be a ruined hut. The arrangement is somewhat confused but there are indications that the remains may be those of a chambered cairn. R W K Reid 1968.

No feature occurs at the position published by the OS, and that shown by the OS is probably 50m to the SSW (see NC36NE 16 and 58). Some 20m SE of the published position, at NC 3886 6554 on a low limestone ridge, are the remains of a structure, presumably that noted by R W K Reid, 1968. It comprises five slabs, 0.4m in maximum height, defining a sub-circular area about 2.2m across, which is backed by a light scatter of heather- covered stones. To the N is an arc of small contiguous stones superficially resembling a kerb, and there are two displaced boulders in the S, the largest 0.8m high. The date and purpose of this structure cannot be determined. Though it resembles a chambered cairn, the dimensions of the stones are small to support a roof, and no transverse slabs or passage are exposed.
Visited by OS (N K B) 28 May 1980.
