Full Description
NC50SE 40 5830 0236.
Some 40 yards south of the double hut circle (NC50SE 8) is a double-mounded construction which may possibly be a kiln.
RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909.
NC 5830 0236. This is not a kiln but a burnt mound, situated alongside a stream, and just outside a field system (NC50SE 8). It measures 8.5m overall diameter and 0.7m high; the centre is depressed, and there is a gap on the SW side leading out towards the stream. Flanking this gap are two large stones 0.7m apart, which are probably the visible remains of a hearth, though that on the west side is probably slightly displaced. The east stone is 1.0m long, protrudes 0.15m above ground level, and has a vertical face to the other stone. A superficial examination of the mound revealed numerous fire-reddened and "rotten" stones.
Surveyed at 1:10 000
Visited by OS (R D L) 4 July 1963 and (J M) 28 July 1976.
