Monument record MHG12205 - Field system, The Cashel

Two enclosures were discovered during field investigation.
RCAHMS 1911, visited 1909; Visited by OS (J M) 30 June 1963.

These are stone-walled hut-circles (A and B) and an associated minor field system situated on undulating ground within reclaimed pasture. Both huts are poorly preserved.
'A' is 6.5m NW-SE by 5m transversely within a denuded, turf-covered wall of uncertain width. There is vague entrance in SE.
'B'is 10m N-S by 8m E-W within a reduced wall spread to 2m wide. The entrance has been from south.
In the vicinity of the huts are about a dozen stone clearance heaps but no measurable cultivation plots are discernible.
Revised at 1/2500 and 1:10 000. Visited by OS (J M) 10 August 1976.

This site was visited as part of a walkover survey in April 2009. Site 5 in the survey report covers records MHG12205, MHG33746 and MHG33747. The hut circles are prominent grass-covered structures occupying level ground to the west of the road junction. These are marked on the 1st edition OS map, with the field system shown as being to the SE, but there are also field clearance piles and possible field boundary rickles to the north, adjacent to the embankment of the road. Some of these may be contemporary with what appears to be a truncated early modern enclosure north of the road but it is most likely that this ground was under cultivation during both time periods. <1>
