Full Description

There is a large mound, a broch, on the farm of Skiall (ND 032 671). J Anderson 1873.

At ND 0375 6730, in an arable field on Hallam Smallholdings, adjacent to Skiall, is a mound, possibly the one referred to by Anderson. It is grass-covered, stony and roughly circular measuring 19.0m NW-SE by 18.0m and 2.3m high, situated on a slight natural rise. It is probably a cairn, not a broch; no structural details are evident. Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (J B) 11 September 1981.

Since the visit by OS field surveyor, the farmer at Hallam has skimmed the top layer of turf from the mound, and dug some 3.0m into the mound on the SE side side for road metalling. The content of slaty fragments and medium-sized slabs is exposed, but no wall-faces or constructions of any sort can be seen, and none were found in the course of excavation. This is definitely not a broch, and a cairn is the most likely explanation.
Visited by OS (N K B) 24 November 1981.
