Full Description

Owner of Callenger estate said that when put in flagpole at his house (near this? Mound) they found a large sherd of Neolithic pottery - HAW 4/2003

NC60NW 23 6047 0744.
At NC 6047 0744, on gentle N-facing slope in rough pasture,is a turf-covered mound, measuring 12.5m E-W by 10.5m, it is 0.6m high from S, and 1.3m from lower N side. Approx in centre two stones protrude. One is an irregular quadrilateral measuring 0.6m by 0.6m by 0.6m high and other, 0.6m by 0.25m, and just protruding through turf, is set at right angles to main face of the other stone.
Superficially the mound resembles a chambered cairn, the protruding stones being the back slab and side slab of a chamber, though the stones do not assume the monolithic proportions typical of a chambered construction. The position of the mound partly on the level and extending down a natural slope is unusual for a cairn, and the close proximity of 18th-19th century settlement may suggest an association. Surveyed at 1:10,000.
Visited by OS (J B) 8 October 1980.

The two stones project from a turf-covered mound; no sign of cairn material. There is nothing to suggest that the structure extended to the W as would have been the case had it indeed been a chambered cairn should have been so systematically robbed. There are no walls nearby, and only some slight stony matter on SW.
Visited by RCAHMS (JNGR) 1991
