Full Description

Hut Circles and Enclosures (NR) (Ten shown)
OS 6"map, (1964)

On a gently sloping S-facing hillslope is a settlement of nine stone walled hut circles ('A'-'J') and a minor field system, discovered during field investigation (OS {W D J}) Ten "hut circles and enclosures" were publsihed on OS 6"map, but that at NC 6344 3980 is a burnt mound (See NC63NW 25).
The huts are oval and vary in size and preservation from 'B' which is 8.0m N-S by 7.0m within an indistinct heather and peat-covered wall spread to 2.0m, with no entrance visible, to 'F' which is well-defined, and measures 12.0m N-S by 10.0m within a wall spread to 2.5m. The entrance in common with other surviving examples is in the S. A small peat-obscured sub-rectangular annexe 4.0m by 4.0m within a low wall spread to 1.5m abuts the NE arc. 'J' is the largest hut at 14.0m by 12.0m internally.
'G', adjacent to the Allt a'Chnoic Leith, is distinctive in plan from the other huts. It consists of a central sub-oval area, 7.5m NE-SW by 5.0m, within a wall about 1.4m wide and 0.5 high. Two annexes abut the hut, neither having an obvious entrance. The wall at the northern annexe is noticeably more stony than the other walling and may be later. The NE end of this annexe is eroded by the burn. (see illustration).
A small minor field system of two hectares surrounds 'A' - 'C' 'E' and 'F'. It consists of clearance heaps, occasional lynchets and peat-masked curving walls. These walls can be seen springing from huts A and F. No measurable plots are discernible. Small areas of sporadic field clearance occur around 'D', 'K' and 'J'.
Revised at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (W D J) 11 May 1961 and (J B) 28 March 1977.
