Full Description
NC63NW 24 6398 3634.
At NC 6398 3634 on the heather-covered slopes to the NE of Loch Tarbhaidh, is a solitary, well-preserved hut. It is 11.3m in diameter within a partially turf-covered wall, faced inside and out by large stones set on edge, indicating a thickness of 1.8m, which widens to 2.3m on the SW downslope and at the entrance in the SE arc. Most of the inner facing stones and several of the outer remain in situ. The position of the entrance is indicated by two earthfast slabs set transversely in the wall, but at this point the inner face is continuous across the entrance gap. This does nor mitigate against it being a hut, but rather suggests secondary re-use, probably as a stock enclosure. The hut interior contains numerous stones, some of which appear to have been arranged to form sub- compartments.
The only remains of associated cultivation are one or two stone clearance heaps nearby, and a small area of smooth, relatively stone-free ground.
Surveyed at 1:10,560.
Visited by OS (N K B) 4 April 1977.
