Full Description

NC63NW 6 634 385. Grumbeg (NAT) OS 6"map, (1964)

The extensive remains of Grumbeg, a depopulated clachan which was cleared, first in 1814 and finally in 1819. In 1873 only a shepherd's house was occupied. Roy (1747-55) shows only a patch of arable with no distinguishable buildings, but the existence of an ancient graveyard (NC63NW 8) indicates an early origin for settlement. The remains, all enclosed within an earth and stone bank, consist of building foundations, banks and enclosures. The buildings range from about 40m by 4m to 5m by 3m with walls up to 0.7m high. Kilns were identified at NC 6331 2843 and in a small building foundation at NC 6354 3853 (OS {WDJ}).
W Roy 1747-55; Name Book 1873; J Prebble 1963; Visited by OS (W D J) 9 May 1961.

Grumbeg (name verified), a deserted township, is as described above. There are remains of at least twenty-three buildings along with associated kail yards and enclosures.
Visited by OS (J B) 18 April 1977.

A township comprising two roofed and nine unroofed buildings and two enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet xliv). One partially roofed and twenty-five unroofed buildings and eleven enlosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1964).
