Full Description
NC55SE 27 5513 5390.
At NC 5513 5390, occupying the summit of a low spur, is an enclosure of "key-hole" or "pear-shaped" plan-form, obscured by peat and heather. It measures internally 13.5m E-W by 6.5m at the wider west end, and 4.5m at the east end; the west arc is distinctly rounded, whereas the east side is almost square. The wall of indeterminate thickness shows little evidence of stone in its content. The entrance of simple form is in the south adjacent to an upright slab, 0.6m high, which formed part of the inner face. There is no evidence of cultivation nearby.
The date and purpose of the enclosure is uncertain, but the depth of peat-covering and the residual slab-lined walling probably indicates an early construction, possibly some form of dwelling.
Surveyed at 1:10 000.
Visited by OS (NKB) 7 November 1978
The site was visited and photographed by D Glass in June 2013. The site was described as:
"This is as described by OS - a roughly elliptical or 'pear-shaped' enclsoure formed by earthern walls standing up to 0.5m.
The shape of the enclosure appears to have been constrained by the limited area of flat ground on the crest of the ridge on which it stands. The appearance is that of a Hut Circle which has been 'squeezed' to fit the ridge." <1>
