(NC 4687 5893) Chambered Cairn (NR) OS 6"map, (1961)
On the end of a wooded spur on W side of Loch Hope is a round cairn, probably chambered, discovered by previous field investigator (OS {A C} 3 June 1959). It measures approximately 15m in diameter and 1.7m high, and is composed of rubble stones now overgrown with bracken and scrub. In the centre is a depression 0.5m deep bounded on three sides by large stones, a number of which are laid flat and apparently overlapping, suggesting disturbance or the upper stones of a corbelled chamber. On the fourth side, the NE, a slab 2.4m long and 0.3m wide protrudes 0.3m above the base of the depression; it is probably a back-slab of an Orkney-Cromarty type cairn, but no other orthostats are exposed. No entrance passage is visible. At the base of the cairn on the W side are the footings of a later building, 3.1m by 1.9m within a wall 0.9m thick, built of cairn material. Visited by OS (N K B) 19 December 1978.
