(NC 3866 6685) Hut Circle (NR) OS 25"map, (1972)
Very ruined hut circle, overall 28 ft.
Info from Dr C S Sandeman, Durness, 14 March 1967.
Centred on NC 386 668 among broken limestone country are two hut circles, the example surveyed by the previous investigator and another at NC 3863 6678. The former is about 10m in diameter within a peat and heather-covered wall spread to 2.5m wide and 0.4m high. The entrance is probably in SE. Set eccentrically within the hut on the S side is an arc of boulders 4.5m long; some of them are on edge, up to 0.5m high, others are loose. This arc of boulders is probably secondary, purpose uncertain.
The second hut, set below a limestone ridge, is of similar construction and condition to the first. Internally it measures 10.0m E-W by 9.5m; the entrance is probably in the E. A peat-covered bank runs into the centre of the hut from the N side; no stone is evident, and it is possibly a natural accumulation.
Isolated field clearance heaps on level ground to the SE are the only indication of contemporary cultivation in the vicinity. No plots are discernible.
Revised at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (A A) 22 July 1971 and (J B) 22 July 1971.
