Full Description
The find spot of human remains was pointed out on OS 6" map at ND 1673 6924 by Mr Watson (14 St Andrews Drive, Thurso)
Visited by OS (N K B) 10 March 1982.
In a corner of a field, previously uncultivated, spring ploughing turned up inhumations at approximately ND 167 692, at Murkle Bay. The plough had destroyed most of the evidence before the human remains were noticed so it was not possible to say anything regarding the type of inhumation or the number or gender of individuals buried. A quantity of stones was also turned up which might have been part of the burial structure. It was only possible to retrieve a few bones, fragments of skull and jaw, together with a few teeth. The burials were in an area where the earth was sandy; the bones were stained brown. The crowns of the teeth showed considerable wear, indicating a coarse diet.
