Information from the old bridge information board:
"The bridge was one of nearly a thousand built by Thomas Telford between 180[0] and 1819 as part of a general plan to improve Highland communications. The plan also included the Caledonian Canal built between 1803 and 1823. The absence of bridges was one of the main weaknesses of the Highland road system at that time and the bridge was an improvement to the existing military road between Inverness and Fort Augustus. It was started in 1805 but delays caused by a 'languid and inattentive contractor' and 'idle workers' resulted in a financial loss of £2,000 for the Guarantor, Sir John Campbell of Ardnamurchan, before final completion in 1813.
The bridge has suffered considerable vandalism in recent years. Please help conserve it by not disturbing the stone-work."
