This is an excellent example of a lock-keepers cottage and will date at least to the mid 19th-century. Almost all other such cottages along the length of the Caledonian Canal have bee listed - it is not clear why this example has been omitted from the register. The building is considered to be of historic value. <1>
Planning permission has been granted for extensions and alterations to this building to form two flats. A condition survey was carried out of the building and its surroundings in June 2009 comprising internal and external photographs. In addition, a trial hole was excavated (Appendix B of report) which revealed that the cottage had been constructed on free-draining material, most likely that which was used to construct the Caledonian Canal embankments. <2>
