Building record MHG16731 - Old Shandwick House

Built c.1790 - 1805 by John Cockburn Ross of Berwickshire who succeeded to Shandwick in 1790. Two storeys and three bays - the centre one is a bow; the flanking ones have Venetian windows at the first floor level.

The two back wings were demolished when the new house was built in 1936-7 (See SMR NH77NE0030)

Old Shandwick, 1790-1805, 'a handsome mansion', was built by Sir george Cockburn Ross of Berwickshire who succeeded in 1790: handsome indeed, even in its present dilapidated state, with centre crenellated bowed bay, Venetyian windows and the remaibns of an elegant cantilevered staircase. Replaced by New Shandwick, c.1900, faintly echoing the style of its predecessor"
