Full Description
NC55SW 5 Centred on 524 518
What may be four unroofed shieling-huts are shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet xxv). No buildings are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1961), but a pile of stones is marked on the site of one of the shieling-huts at NC 5240 5186.
Information from RCAHMS (FO) 21 August 1995.
The site was visited and photographed by D Glass and described as:
"A group of at least four Shieling Huts:
1. NC52387 51817 Shieling Hut measuring 4m by 4m with walls standing up to 0.5m
2. NC52399 51840 Shieling Hut measuring 5m by 4m with a small pile of stones on the east end. This is probably the ‘Pile of Stones’ marked on the OS map
3. NC52412 51855 Shieling Hut measuring 7m by 3m with a possible but indistinct 2m extension at the east end
4. NC52442 52045 Shieling Hut measuring 5m by 4m
5. NC52480 51795 indistinct remains of two possible Shieling Huts but which might be natural features
6. NC53060 52668 indistinct remains of a possible Shieling Hut measuring 4m by 3m and built into a slope some distance from the main group" <1>
