Full Description
A large stone basin built into the garden wall of the Manse of Kiltearn at Evanton, discovered by Mrs M Macdonald of 13 Ash Hill, Evanton. It is probably not a font, but a mortar for various domestic, agricultural or industrial purposes. The 1st edition OS map of Ross-shire, 1874-5, depicts two small farms and a croft nearby, and the basin may have come from one of these or from an earlier settlement in the area. It has been re-used as a solid base-stone for the roadside wall, probably long before the modern manse was built there.
Information from RCAHMS (I Fisher) 21 February 1995.
