Monument record MHG18439 - Kappoch Farmstead

REFERENCE: Notes on the use of the building by Mrs J E Gibb, Mousehall Cottage, Tidebrook, Wadhurst, Sussex and Murdo Ross, formerly employed on Kappoch. May/June 1986.

1. The wheel was breast fed and 16 ft diameter.
2. The workroom bench was used for joinery.
3. Under the workroom was the sawmill with a circular saw.
4. The Drying Kiln had metal plates about 4 ft from floor of kiln and under these plates the kiln was fired with off cuts of wood from the sawmill.
5. The sacks of meal were dropped down through the trap door and the mill could make bruised oats for cattle feed or ground fine, medium or coarse for human consumption.
6. Under the Drying Kiln was the millus store for his potatoes etc.
7. Under the hay loft were stalls for 6 horses and one loose box-mangers were filled from hay loft above along east side of stable. Hanners was hung on the west wall of stable.
8. Below the threshing mill was a place for the chaff (fed to cattle with treacle).
9. Above this was the straw barn and hay barn.
10. In the corn room was a hand-operated machine for grading corn called the Fanners-it separated light oats and weed seeds for hens, oats for use, and oats to be kept as seed oats.
11. "Room over Store" and store below it was the Millers for his cow and he got its keep.
12. Under the granary was the byre with stalls for 12 cows and along the North outer wall was a passage way for feeding them.
13. Under the left hand (west) wing of the granary was turnip store and hand-operated slices. This shed had double doors.
14. Next on the ground floor of the west wing was dairy with Caithness stone shelves.
15. Then came the Miller's house. There was no water laid on at all. Animals were loosed to drink from the spring fed pond and there were outside privies.
