NH88SW 14.01 Centred 8320 8390

Tain ranges were in operation before the Second World War. During 1940 the area was obstructed with coils of barbed wire and old cars to deter German troop carrier landings. The airfield of 1941 (NH88SW 14.00) was built on part of the original ranges. The modern range is still depicted on the latest OS map (OS 1:10000 map, 1980) with a tracked target area still shown (NH88SW 14.02).
D J Smith 1983

The modern Tain bombing range covers a large area of Morrich More, to the N of Tain Airfield. It consists of a modern control tower and support buildings (NH88SW 14.08), with several targets to the NW near to Green Hillock and Green Hill (centred NH 825 843). A further observation tower is situated at NH 8190 8337 to co-ordinate fall of bombs etc. The modern tower replaced an older wooden version (NH 8373 8330) which survived until c.1991, with the control room situated on top of a wooden trestle construction which had once supported a radar beacon.
