Full Description

Heavy AA Battery located at ND 2120 6643. The battery was armed with 2 x 3 inch guns. The code was C2. J A Guy, 20th Century Defences (report nos 1, 8 & 11)

This airfield was strategically important in that it was part of the defence of Scapa Flow and Northern Scotland.
It opened as a satellite to Wick airfield (ND35SE 103) in May 1940 and the last operational aircraft left Castletown during April 1944. One of the last aerial visitors was in 1945.
The airfields surviving remains consis of many huts and overgrown concrete, the former decontamination centre is full of cow manure, the Bellman and 'T3' hangars are long dismantled.

There was a large 4.7 inch naval gun salvaged from a shipwreck mounted in concrete outside the station HQ, but this was later 'retrieved' by the Navy.
