Full Description

Thumbnail Photo of township building with corrugated iron roof.
Wester Ross Project - Cathy Dagg, 23/3/04

The majority of the 19th century croft houses are at the top of the crofts, now inaccessible from the road and therefore derelict. Modern housing is concentrated along the road, particularly north of the turning from the A832.

As a crofting township, Laide does not appear to have gained an identity until the second half of the 19th century. A few houses are marked on the Admiralty chart of the 1840s, together with the chapel and salmon house, but no placename. Interestingly, this chart records ‘remains of large trees’ (assumed to be a feature visible from the sea) on the hill slope at the top of the crofts.
